Plant for a Purpose

Plant for a Purpose Making a difference one tree at a time! PLANT FOR A PURPOSE In June 2024, La Brea Industrial Development Company Limited (LABIDCO), our landlord in Trinidad, invited us to volunteer at the launch of Phase II of their “Plant for a Purpose” project on the La Brea Industrial Estate. Owned and managed by LABIDCO, the La Brea Industrial Estate is 407 acres of fully developed land with all relevant infrastructure and utilities. The Estate is strategically located on the South-Western peninsula of Trinidad and is readily accessible via the Southern Main Road. The Estate consists of:    65 serviceable lots for light manufacturing and energy-based industries    a 14m wide Estate Corridor Road    The Port of Brighton – a deep water harbor The “Plant for a Purpose” project was launched in 2023 with LABIDCO utilizing unusable lands on the Estate for biological carbon sequestration through tree planting. This initiative plays an important role in offsetting the quality of air and promoting better health for the island. During Phase I, 181 trees were planted on approximately 4000 sq.m. of land. LABIDCO launched Phase II of the project, planting 400 trees on 15,000 sq.m. and Tiger was there to help with our Trinidad team!

Tackling the Tobago Oil Spill

TACKLING THE TOBAGO OIL SPILL Lessons learned & recommendations On February 7, 2024, Tiger Tanks Trinidad responded to a critical environmental incident when the “Gulfstream” barge ran aground and subsequently overturned off the southwestern coast of Tobago. This unfortunate event resulted in a substantial release of hydrocarbons into the sea, impacting a significant stretch of the Tobago shoreline. Our dedicated team swiftly mobilized to manage the cleanup, addressing the diverse and challenging waste generated by the spill with effective and sustainable strategies. RESPONSE EFFORTS Initial Challenges Proximity to Shoreline: The vessel’s proximity to the shoreline left us with little time to implement response plans. Equipment Mobilization: Mobilizing equipment from Trinidad presented significant logistical challenges due to the remote location of the incident. The task was further complicated by the timing, as the mobilization coincided with the weekend before Trinidad’s Carnival celebrations, a period when travel and accommodations were nearly fully booked. This added an extra layer of difficulty for our team, requiring swift and creative solutions to ensure timely deployment. Environmental Conditions: The spill occurred during the sargassum seaweed season, complicating the clean-up and waste management efforts.Key Actions Taken On-Site Training: Supervisors provided hands-on demonstrations for deploying absorbent booms and conducted training on various shoreline clean-up operations. Waste Management: Solid and liquid waste were meticulously categorized and stored in appropriate containers, such as Frac Tanks and Waste Skips, ensuring safe and efficient disposal. Equipment Deployment: Critical equipment, including ocean booms and sorbents were swiftly deployed to effectively contain the spill. WASTE MANAGEMENT AND CATEGORIZATION Waste Types and Disposal The cleanup process resulted in the generation of various waste types, including oily sand, debris, soiled PPE, and more. Each waste type was handled according to its nature. Disposal Options Oily Debris: Incinerated to minimize environmental impact. Non-Oily Debris: Disposed of in landfills. Recyclables: PET bottles and packaging materials were recycled. LESSONS LEARNED AND RECOMMENDATIONS Preparedness for Future IncidentsThis incident highlighted the critical need for robust spill response plans and the importance of having adequate resources readily available. Key recommendations include: Spill Modeling Data: Ensure that all facilities with potential spill risks maintain updated modeling data to accurately predict shoreline impacts and mobilization timelines. Community Involvement: Train local communities to effectively support response efforts in the event of similar incidents. Resource Management: Maintain a comprehensive resource list, including contacts for catering, medical support, security, and other essential services, to ensure rapid mobilization when needed. CONCLUSION Tiger Tanks Trinidad remains committed to providing efficient and sustainable solutions in the face of environmental challenges. The lessons learned from the Tobago oil spill will guide our future efforts to ensure that we are always prepared to “Make It Happen.”

Tiger Offshore Rentals Cuttings Box Lost in Hurricane

Cuttings Box Recovery

On August 29, 2005, Tiger lost a 25BBL Cuttings Box (#12352) during Hurricane Katrina, one of the most powerful and destructive tropical storms to ever hit the Gulf Coast. The unit was onsite at the Baker Drilling Fluid dock in Venice, Louisiana and was rented to Brandt-Varco for use on the Hercules 21 jackup rig working for Chevron in the Gulf of Mexico when the CAT5 catastrophic storm made landfall. 16 YEARS LATER… The unit was recovered on December 11, 2021 by Weeks Marine while dredging for construction of the Spanish Pass Marsh Creation Project. Tiger took possession of the cuttings box and refurbished the unit to be placed back into service as part of our best-in-class rental fleet.  Pitting repairs had to be made throughout the box. Both lids and mounting hardware had to be replaced along with the entire base. The Port Fourchon team did an excellent job in the restoration process, and we are proud to say you cannot point it out amongst our cuttings box fleet. When we say our equipment is built tough for offshore terrain, we mean it! social share Recent Posts Be the first to know! Sign up for our newsletter to keep up with Tiger Rentals’ news. SIGNUP

Project Lift Off with SpaceX Starship

In July 2020, SpaceX purchased 2 ultra-deepwater semi-submersible rigs (8500 and 8501) from Ensco/Valaris for $3.5 million each. The rigs were purchased by limited liability corporation Lone Star Mineral Development. Elon Musk plans to build “floating, superheavy-class spaceports for Mars, moon & hypersonic travel around Earth.” SpaceX’s Starship offshore platforms are modified oil rigs now under construction to provide a sea launch and landing pad option for their second-generation launch vehicle: the super heavy-lift Starship system, consisting of the Super Heavy booster and Starship second stage. Tiger Offshore sold (1) DNV47.5 bbl Fluid Transport Tank to SpaceX to use as a diesel fuel tank for a back-up generator on the rig. Pictures here show the actual tank and the proposed modifications we are making to convert it to a true “double walled” fuel storage tank. Also shown are the Ensco 8501 or “Phobos” launch pad before and after conceptual rendering of what it might look like. By Paul Fussell, Corporate Sales Manager – Tiger Offshore

Tiger Industrial’s Baton Rouge Yard to the Rescue

When the term “make it happen” is put to the test, our Tiger Industrial Baton Rouge team does not disappoint. The crew recently came to the rescue for a client in the Port Allen, Louisiana area when the client called with an emergency for some pumps. “We got the call around 9:15 AM. The customer was trying to bypass a creek for a pipeline dig and inspection but the 2 pumps they had from a competitor weren’t doing the job by themselves. The brand manager and his team determined flow and total dynamic head, based on the conversation and selected the right pumps for the project. Two 6NNT Pumps with hoses and berms were needed to get the job done right. The customer sent one of his guys to pick up the pumps and rented an additional 7kW LED Light Tower and a 528 Gallon Fuel Cube on site! Our team followed behind with the light tower. When they got to the jobsite, they helped the client’s crew unload the equipment, roll out hoses, and set up the pumps. The client was pumping and bypassing the creek successfully by 12:30 pm. “I went out there again on Saturday to check on the equipment and help hook up the fuel cube pump. Everyone was very impressed with, not only our equipment, but the quality and timeliness of the service as well; we have already put in multiple quotes for them for jobs they have coming up in the future since this order,” the sales rep happily exclaimed. Talk about prompt and efficient service! Within 3 hours, the team solved the problem, took the order, delivered the equipment and set it up at a location that was about 45 minutes’ drive.
